Find your total rise, measured from finished floor to finished floor, to see how many risers the stair needs, how tall each one is and how far the stair runs. Each row uses the fewest risers no taller than 7 3/4" (the IRC R311.7.5.1 maximum) and 10" treads (the IRC R311.7.5.2 minimum).
A stair has one tread fewer than risers because the top step is the upper floor, so total run = treads × 10". Local codes can set other limits, and the chart does not cover headroom, width or handrails; check with your building department.

Rounding and how to use the chart

Riser heights are rounded to the nearest 1/16". Lay out the stringer from the exact height, total rise ÷ risers (108" ÷ 14 = 7.714"), so the rounding does not add up over the flight.
Deeper treads make the stair longer: with 11" treads, a 108" rise runs 13 × 11" = 143" instead of 130". For your exact rise, another tread depth, the stringer length and the stairwell opening, use the stair calculator.
Estimates only. Check measurements, product labels and local building codes before you buy or build.
